About The Ten By Ten Show

This year marks the fifth anniversary of Jackson Junge Gallery's popular Ten By Ten show, following major success for the show in the past four years.

Since it began, Ten By Ten has celebrated Chicago's diverse arts community while providing an opportunity for both emerging artists and seasoned creators to exhibit alongside one another. The gallery started the show to inspire new artwork and bring together artists at all stages in their careers.

The gallery leaves the subject matter for artworks entirely up to the artists. The only requirement: every artwork must measure exactly ten by ten inches and be able to hang from the wall on a wire. Otherwise, the exhibit is wide open in terms of medium, color, style, and all other artistic choices.

The result: hundreds of artworks displayed in a massive grid across the gallery, giving collectors a slice of current happenings in many different arts scenes in Chicago and around the world.

Come enjoy this innovative sampling of diverse works and take the opportunity to discover new art and artists.

About Luminous

Luminous began as a way to turn traditional flower painting on its head. Instead of using light colored paper and dark or bright paint colors, it uses dark paper and mostly white paint to depict a single blossom.

This painting continues my exploration of handmade Asian papers. It's made on handmade navy colored shuen paper, which brings out the fine gradations of white paint and bright yellow color at the flower's center. The green paint used for the stem and leaves, chosen specifically for its ability to show color well on dark paper, appears to glow, giving the painting an otherworldly quality and a mysterious feeling.

Like the other paintings I have created on these special papers, I mounted Luminous myself, by hand, onto handmade cotton paper.

To meet the Ten By Ten show's size requirements, I worked closely with a skilled framer to choose just the right materials, a white frame and midnight blue mat, to bring out the painting's special features.

The framer created the frame to measure exactly ten by ten inches, then floated the delicate painting over the mat to help showcase both papers used in creating Luminous. Because there is space between the mat and the painting, the frame acts like a shadowbox and allows the painting to breathe freely behind the glass covering.

NOTE: because of the painting's dark paper, we used a special museum grade glass to eliminate glare and allow the paper to show to best advantage.
