About Life Force

Life Force continues my exploration of Asian papers, brushes, and painting techniques.

This painting began as an experiment with brushes to see what kind of effects I could create by playing with one of my favorite brushes and seeing what would happen by varying the pressure while creating a single line or shape.

It was thrilling to feel the brush begin to dance and guide me in making lively lines that formed leaf shapes. I loved the changing thick and thin effects that emerged in a single stroke.

These leaves suddenly had a life of their own, and I knew I was onto something.

I added powerful petals above, then a stem. And then some green colors for the leaves and bright orange, yellow, and ochre for the petals.

The force coming through my arm and the brush compelled me to let the colors flow, just as the lines had, and the greens especially began jumping outside the lines in their own dance. It felt to me as if the force that gives all of us life was pouring through me, right onto the paper.

And that's why I love this painting. And why I called it Life Force.

Come feel its power - join me at the opening. I'm so excited to share it with you!
