About Late Harvest

Late Harvest combines watercolor on board with found objects consisting of rusted metal and empty cosmetic jars and lids.

This piece represents a response to the shift I’ve been experiencing after entering my 60s.

Like wine made from a grapes harvested late in the season, sometimes after they have turned nearly into raisins or even have snow on them, I and my art have lived through many days and seen the seasons change. And like a late harvest wine, my life has taken on a mellow sweetness in this stage of life.

Artist Statement

Here is what I wrote in my artist statement about this Late Harvest piece and time of life:

"As I approached my 60s, my art began to change away from painting toward mixed media. This outward shift mirrored an inner one. I became more introspective, feeling myself changing, rearranging inwardly while releasing pastimes, interests, relationships, and possessions to prepare for a new chapter. Now in my 60s, making sense of my experiences means making new art related to my evolving identity. Wise woman, elder, crone - whatever the term, it means letting go of the ingenue, maiden, and even middle aged person I once was. My mixed media works explore my feelings about entering new territory as an elder in the human tribe...how far I've come and what I hold within, a cache of wisdom built up through (sometimes hard) experience. I live the paradox of reaching my seventh decade yet feeling young and new. I put my best self forward yet feel no need to deny my age, gifts, and abilities. For those with eyes to see, perceiving the world through the heart, I am woman, I am crone, and I am ageless. My seeds of wisdom are ready for sowing in fertile ground: ask me, and I will sow for you what lies within my mysterious self."
