Earthy, practical energy abounds today, with half the planets in earth signs. The Sun and Pluto can be found in Capricorn, the Moon and Jupiter are moving through Taurus, and Mars is energizing Virgo.
This earth emphasis can help bring our plans down to earth, making our ideas practical and our efforts efficient so we can manifest what has taken shape in our minds. At the same time, however, the urge to get to work and make real progress on challenging goals can bring up difficult emotions.
The Sun and Pluto in Capricorn demand that we shine light on our darkest secrets about work, status, and career. Although these energies can help raise our awareness and increase our integrity, they also can make us so sharp and critical toward ourselves that we feel unable or incompetent to take on the big tasks that lie before us. If our criticism extends to others, we can short-circuit cooperation and inhibit creativity.
With the Moon and Jupiter in Taurus, we can be inspired to embrace values that reflect our heart’s desire and our capacity for wisdom. Without awareness, however, Jupiter might simply expand Taurus’s potential for verbal clumsiness and criticism, and we may feel deeply hurt by dogmatic beliefs or opinions presented as truth.
Mars in Virgo can bring tremendous passion to our desire to improve the world and perfect ourselves. Used without awareness, however, this energy can have us seeing nothing but flaws and feeling nothing but anger about them.
In addition, Neptune and Venus are in Aquarius, an air sign whose detachment can feel cold and uncaring when out of balance. Mercury and Uranus are both in fire signs, making our minds impulsive and heating up our desire for independence and freedom. That leaves no major planets in water signs and puts us in an emotional gap.
To work effectively with these energies, we need to supply our own emotional balance by being gentle and tender with ourselves and others. Rather than looking at a major goal or project and seeing a mountain peak that must be reached now, we can bear in mind that reaching the top requires patience and time (both hallmarks of Capricorn).
In the beginning, all we must do is start. Then, we make a small step forward. With persistence, we move ahead, little by little, peu à peu. Over time, we draw closer to the summit until, one day, we stand at the top and look out to survey how far we’ve come and how beautiful and meaningful the view now appears to us.
